ANALOGOUS STRUCTURES:

When animals from different groups with different ancestors live in the same habitat they can sometimes form similar structures that have a certain function. This is because of the similar way of life in their respective habitats. However, since they have different ancestors and belong to different groups these structures tend to be very different anatomically despite their similar functions.  These are called analogous structures.

HOMOLOGOUS STRUCTURES:

Some structures in different organisms are inherited from a common ancestor. They are very similar anatomically but have different functions. These are called homologous structures. Sometimes they even have similar developmental patterns as embryos and have the same type of bones, blood vessels, nerves, muscles etc.
