What is homozygous and heterozygous?
Homozygous is when both of the alleles for a specific gene are the same (homo = same).
Heterozygous is when the two alleles for a specific gene are different (hetero = different).
Diploid organisms, such as humans and garden pea plants, get one copy of a gene from the paternal parent and another copy of the same gene from the maternal parent.
The gene is the same, but the alleles can be different.
For example, in garden pea plants there is a gene that controls height.
There are two alternate forms of that gene (2 alleles): T for tall and t for short. A garden pea plant gets the same gene (for height) from both parents, but the alleles of that gene can be the same (example, TT) or different (example: Tt).
When they are the same, the individual is homozygous for that gene; when they are different, the individual is heterozygous for that gene.
