Compounds of hydrogen & carbon are known as hydrocarbons.
Ex- Methane & Ethane etc.
Saturated hydrocarbons have single bond b/w the atoms whereas unsaturated hydrocarbons have 2 (alkenes) or 3 (alkenes) bonds b/w the atoms.
Ex- Methane CH4

“Hydrocarbons” are the organic compounds which contain carbon along with hydrogen atoms bonded to each other.

Differences between unsaturated and saturated hydrocarbons:

SATURATED HYDROCARBONS:

  • Saturated hydrocarbons are the compounds that have a single covalent body and are called alkanes.
  • Saturated hydrocarbons have more hydrogen atoms as compared to unsaturated hydrocarbons.
  • Examples for saturated hydrocarbons are ethane, methane

UNSATURATED HYDROCARBONS:

  • Unsaturated hydrocarbons are compounds that have “double or triple covalent” bonds.
  • Unsaturated hydrocarbons with double covalent bonds are called "alkenes" and the ones with triple covalent bonds are called alkynes.
  • Examples for unsaturated hydrocarbons are propene, butyne.
