It was developed by Gleason for driving rear axles of automobiles in 1925 in the U.S. It is still mainly used for cars. A Hypoid gear is used when the included angle is square and distance between axes are relatively small. The hypoid gear is viewed as an intermediate between a bevel gear and a worm gear machine.
