Acid-base indicators are chemicals used to determine whether an aqueous solution is acidic, neutral, or alkaline. Because acidity and alkalinity relate to pH, they may also be known as pH indicators. Examples of acid-base indicators include litmus paper, phenolphthalein, and red cabbage.

Answer:

Indicators are chemicals which help us to identify whether a solution is acidic or alkaline and tells us about the strength of the acidity or alkalinity of the solution .

Example of an indicator is litmus paper .

Blue litmus turns red when the solution is acidic .

Red litmus turns blue when the solution is basic .

Explanation:

Indicators are of two types :

(A) Universal indicators .

(B) Acid Base indicators .

A solution's pH ( power of hydrogen ) is the negative logarithm to the power 10 of the hydrogen concentration of the solution .

If the solution has pH 7 , then it is neutral .

If the solution has pH more than 7 , it is basic .

If the solution has pH less than 7 , then it is acidic .

Universal indicators can determine the strength of the solution , that is its pH .

Acid Base indicators can only tell whether the solution is acidic or basic and cannot determine the strength of the solution .
