An indicator is a substance that changes color in acidic and basic medium.

  • We cannot identify everything by tasting it therefore special types of substances are used to test whether a substance is acidic or basic. These substances are called indicators .
  • There are two types of indicators , natural indicators and synthetic indicators .

Commonly used natural indicators - litmus as indicator , turmeric as indicator , China rose as an indicator and beetroot and purple cabbage as indicators .

Commonly used synthetic indicators - phenolphthalein and methyl orange .
