What are indicators ?

  • A pH indicator is a halochromic chemical compound added in small amounts to a solution so the pH (acidity or basicity) of the solution can be determined visually.
  • Hence, a pH indicator is a chemical detector for hydronium ions (H3O+) or hydrogen ions (H+) in the Arrhenius model.
  • Normally, the indicator causes the color of the solution to change depending on the pH. Indicators can also show change in other physical properties.
  • For example, olfactory indicators show change in their odor.
  • The pH value of a neutral solution is 7.0 at 25°C (standard laboratory conditions).

Examples :-

  1. Litmus
  2. Red cabbage
  3. Turmeric
  4. China Rose petals

Effect of Indicators on Acid :-

  • They are usually weak acids or bases, which when dissolved in water dissociate slightly and form ions.
  • Consider an indicator which is a weak acid, with the formula HIn

Effect of Indicators on Base :-

  • If the indicator is a weak base, the base, and its conjugate acid display different colors.

Effect of Indicators on Water :-

  • pH is really a measure of the relative amount of free hydrogen and hydroxyl ions in the water.
  • Water that has more free hydrogen ions is acidic, whereas water that has more free hydroxyl ions is basic.
  • Since pH can be affected by chemicals in the water, pH is an important indicator of water that is changing chemically.
