Causes of the infectious diseases by:

  • Bacteria - single-celled organisms that are responsible for illnesses such as urinary tract infections(UTI), Tuberculosis (TB), strep throat. Hepatitis B, Dengue
  • Viruses - Much smaller than bacteria, viruses can cause a number of diseases ranging from the common cold to AIDS, Ebola, Covid - 19.
  • Fungi - Skin diseases, like athlete's foot, ringworm, Coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever), Jock Itch, Yeast infection are caused by fungi. Few fungi can infect the lungs or even the nervous system.
  • Parasites - Infections caused by parasites are Guinea worm, schistosomiasis, amebiasis, giardiasis.

Spread of infections through direct contact:

  • Person to person. Example - cough, cold, flu, AIDS, Ebola, etc.
  • Animal to person. Example - Swine flu, Ebola, etc.
  • Mother to the unborn child. Example - rubella, syphilis, Hepatitis B, AIDS, etc.

Spread of the infection through indirect contact:

  • Insect bites. Example - mosquitoes - Malaria, Dengue.
  • Food contamination. Example - Escherichia Coli
