Features of reaction intermediate

The reaction intermediate appears in the reaction mechanism but does not appear in the overall reaction or in the products.

i) It is always formed in one step and consumed in the subsequent step in the mechanism.

(ii) Its concentration is very small and cannot be determined easily.

iv) Rate of the reaction is independent of concentration of this intermediate

(V) The life period of the reaction intermediate is extremely small, hence cannot be isolated.

(vi) The composition of the reaction intermediate, decides the mechanism of the reaction.
