Intermolecular forces are the forces which mediate interaction between molecules, including forces of attraction or repulsion which act between atoms and other types of neighboring particles, e.g. atoms or ions.

The force in between the particles. It can be atoms or ions. These are related to the three states of matter in the way that the in case of solid, the molecules are closely packed and the force of attraction in between them is more, stronger intermolecular forces act in between them.
