interstitial compound :-

interstitial compound and those compound which are formed when the small atoms like hydrogen carbon nitrogen etc trapped inside the crystal lattice of metals they are generally non - stoichiometric.

most of transition metals form interstitial compounds with small non metal atoms such as hydrogen boron carbon and nitrogen is small atom enters into the interstitial void between the letters of transition metal and form chemical bond with transition matter for example steel and cast iron become hard by forming interstitial compounds with carbon the existence of the country orbital in transition element and their ability to make bond with trapped small atom in main cause of interstitial compound formation .

Transition metals are large in size and contain lots of interstitial sites. Transition elements can trap atoms of other elements (that have small atomic size), such as H, C, N, in the interstitial sites of their crystal lattices. The resulting compounds are called interstitial compounds.
