Explanation:

Ions are formed when the number of protons in an atom does not equal the number of electrons. If more protons are present, the ion is positive and is known as a cation; if more electrons are present, the ion is negative and referred to as an anion.

Ions are charged particles formed by atoms by loss or gain of electrons in valence shells.

There are of two types :

CATIONS

  • These are positively charged ions. These are formed by loss of electrons by atoms from their valence shells.

Example

  • Na+ , Ca²+ , Al³+

ANIONS

  • These are negatively charged ions formed by gain of electrons by atoms in their valence shells.

Example

  • Cl- , O²- , N³-
