1. Cations: When the atom of a metal loses one or more electrons, the resulting species is called cation. It is positively charged. In this case, the metal atom is said to be  oxidised. For example:

Cu --> Cu2+ + 2e-

2.Anions: When the atom of a non-metal gains one or more electrons, the resulting species is called anion. It is negatively charged. In this case, the non-metal atom is said to be reduced. For example:

Cl + e-  --> Cl-
