What are ions? Name the 2 types of ions

7059Mohitsingh1: Ions are atoms of any element or any atomic number which have either a negative or positive charge. This is due to the atom having either a missing electron, or an extra electron. Normal atoms are neutral and do not have a positive or negative charge, and this is because the numberof electrons is the same as the atomic number.

An atom  having positive and negative charge is known as Ion.

There are two types of Ions:-

1. Cations.

2. Anions

Cations - positively charged Ions
example - Na+ , Mg+

Anions - Negatively charged Ions.
example - Cl-, OH-

Anonymous: bro group of atoms are called radicals
Anonymous: only charged particles called ions

=) Ions are charged particles which form from neutral atom.

◆ There are two types of ions:-

1) cations
2) anions

=) cations are formed when atoms looses electrons
I.e cations are positive charged particles.

ex:- when sodium looses it's outermost electron it becomes sodium ion or cation

=> Na ---------> Na^+ + e

where Na* is cation

2) anions are negative charged particles formed when an atom gains electron

ex:- when chlorine(Cl) gain an electron it becomes an anion

=> Cl +e --------> Cl^-
