Air currents in the upper layers of the atmosphere is known as jet streams. It could determine the arrival and depature of the monsoon winds in India.

The jet stream plays a dominant role in bringing western disturbance to India. This disturbances caused rainfall in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh which is very useful for cultivation of wheat. It also brings snowfall in the hills of Jammu and Kashmir

☆(for ur understanding ):A low pressure depression originates over the Mediterranean Sea and travels eastwards across Iran and Pakisthan and reaches India. This low pressure depression is called 'Western disturbances '.
