The bond of social relationships that constitute kinship in a particular culture, including the terminology that is used and the reciprocal obligations that are entailed. There are two basic kinds of kinship ties: those based on blood that trace descent and those based on marriage, adoption, or other connections. Some sociologists and anthropologists have argued that kinship goes beyond familial ties, and even involves social bonds.

Kin relationships are traditionally defined as ties based on blood and marriage. They include lineal generational bonds (children, parents, grandparents, and great- grandparents), collateral bonds(siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews, and aunts and uncles), and ties with in-laws.
