The limiting reagent (or limiting reactant or limiting agent) in a chemical reaction is a reactant that is totally consumed when the chemical reaction is completed. The amount of product formed is limited by this reagent, since the reaction cannot continue without it.

Answer:

The limiting reagent in a chemical reaction is a reactant that is totally consumed when the chemical reaction is completed. The amount of product formed is limited by this reagent, since the reaction cannot continue without it.

Example-let us consider the reaction of solution and chlorine.

2Na+Cl  2 →2NaCl

2Na atoms react with 1 Cl2  molecule. So, if we have 6Na moles, 3Cl2 molecule will be required, if there are more than 3 moles of Cl2  gas, sodium(Na) will act as a limiting reagent and some Cl 2 molecule will remain as an excess reagent.
