The Earth’s crust and uppermost mantle is divided up into huge blocks called “tectonic plates”. These blocks move relative to each other, causing earthquakes and volcanoes and mountain building.

What makes them move is a much-argued issue. Here is a summary of the main proposed mechanisms:

Push. Magma coming up from the Earth’s interior pushes plates apart at midocean ridges, forming new plate material in the process.
Drag. The mantle rocks slowly flow in convection patterns, dragging the plates along.
