The term “living fossil” is mainly used for describing the similarities and differences between the living organisms and fossils of extant specimens which virtually had unchanged structure and function.

There are some organisms which posses characters which are very primitive. These organisms are supposed to be extinct. They have escaped from the evolutionary time scale and are still living. Their contemporary organisms are all extinct. These are called living fossils.
Eg:-Animals--->sphenodon
Plants--->ginko biloba
