Lok Adalat is a system of alternative dispute resolution developed in India vide Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. It roughly means "People's court". India has had a long history of resolving disputes through the mediation of village elders.

The chief advantages are (i) these Adalats work in the spirit of compromise, (ii) deliver speedy and inexpensive justice - One can move Lok Adalat by an application on a plain paper or format available with Legal Services Authorities, (iii) Their Awards are final, (iv) Lok Adalats pass Awards regarding those disputes also which are at "pre-litigation stage", and (v) Lok Adalats could reduce the workload of subordinate courts.

→The following types of cases are being taken up by Lok Adalats in India - matrimonial disputes, Bank Recovery cases and House Tax cases, etc. In Delhi permanent Lok Adalats have been set up for settlement of all pending disputes concerning Rajdhani Power Limited (Electricity disputes), Delhi Development Authority, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd., etc.
