Mechanical waves are of two types- transverse and longitudinal.sound is a longitudinal wave while light is a mechanical wave..transverse waves are those in which the direction of vibration of particles is perpendicular to the propagation of wave and longitudinal waves r those in which particles vibrate parallel to the propagation of wave.. longitudinal waves can travel in all mediums while transverse waves cannot travel in gases.
