When the particles of the medium vibrate about their mean position, in the direction parallel to the propagation of the waves, the waves are called Longitudinal Waves.

(in short, when the particles move to and fro in the direction of wave, they are called longitudinal waves)

When the particles in the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction of propagation of waves, they are called Transverse Waves

(in short, when the particles up and down, they are called transverse waves)
