Maggot is a generic term for the larva of any fly. The larvae of some species of flies are actually quite dangerous, because they burrow through live tissue and feed on it. Animals are more often afflicted than humans, because they have few ways to defend themselves from infestation through open wounds, exposed skin or mucus membranes.

The disease of being infested with fly larvae is called myiasis or “fly strike”, and it is common in the tropical amd sub-tropical regions where these flies are prevalent. The species of fly which can cause myiasis include bot flies, screw flies, flesh flies and blow flies, and the larvae, when they are embedded in living flesh, are often erroneously called “worms,” or might be mistaken for a cyst or boil. Without question, a severe case of myiasis can result in death, usually from secondary infections.
