Delhi has been a seat of history. It has been a spectator to several rulers ruling it with either compassion or domination. The British Rule or the British Raj as it was called came up in India as colonists in the year 1858. After a long struggle period, this British rule came to an end in 1947.

The British Rule followed after the Britishers entered India with a motive to create good trade relations. Initially, they did they establish a trade relation with India, with the help of the Mughal rulers. The British colonial rule came as a shock to the Indian rulers and the Mughal Emperors. But after entering India, British colonists had gained their grounds slowly and steadily.

Coming of British Rule:

The Portuguese came in first with a trade motive, but they were not much successful in capturing places to rule. They came to India in the early 16th century and settled in the coastal regions. But the British were determined to spread their wings in India as rulers and not just as traders. They took the administrative control in their own hands from the Mughal rulers. The Battle of Plassey in 1757 marked the end of feudalism and the beginning of colonization. With the British Rule, came a lot of confusions too in India. People had been habituated with the Mughal Rule. The change led to a lot of discomfort. These discomforts lead to the Sepoy Mutiny.

The British mainly captured Bengal in 1757. The British rule captured Bengal under the keen guidance of Governor General Robert Clive as the British East India Company. Bengal was won from the ruler Siraj-Ud-doulah, Oudh and other regions were snatched away from the then Mughal ruler, Bahadur Shah Zafar and Wajid Ali Shah.

Reason for the advent of British Rule:

There were several reasons behind the advent of British Rule in India. The country was slowly being subject to several crisis situations. The major crisis was that of finance, which was aggravated by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb had levied heavy taxes on trade as well as on his subjects, which led to unrest. Apart from this, the Maratha rulers too had not much unity among themselves. The lack of unity led to constant wars. This internal dispute provided the right opportunity to the Britishers to barge into the country as rulers.

The Indian rulers were divided and the humongous Mughal dynasty was falling apart. These reasons were more than enough to make the right grounds for the colonists to plan their eternal stay as administrators.

East India Company in India:

British East India Company had factories in Bengal, Surat and Madras. But their actual motive was to make profit after capturing all other states of India. They fought several battles which made them ascend in the country.

Eminent People in the British Rule:

Lord Cornwallis

General Wellesley

Lord Dalhousie

Lord Harding

After a prolonged period of struggle for freedom, British Rule was brought to an end. It had been successful in its aim of capturing the wealth of India. The British rule gifted several good things to India, like education system, railways and so on. But, they also broke the country into pieces and shook the integrity before they left
