These forests are also called littoral or tidal forests. Thus, the mangrove forests are fouri only in those areas which are affected by tidal waters. Such areas are around the deltas et the Ganga, Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri rivers. These forests are also found tidal creeks and coastal areas, where mud, silt and saline water have accumulated. The tree can grow in fresh and saline water.

In the delta region of the Ganga and the Brahmaputra rivers, sundari trees grow abundantly. Thus, this delta region is also called the Sunderbans. The sundari tree provides hard and durable wood, which is widely used for boat-making and as building material. This tree normally reaches the length of about 30 metres. Other trees which delta regions are coconut, keora, agar, palm, etc.

Plants that grow on other plants (the epiphytes) are found everywhere. The Royal Bengal Tiger is the most important animal found in mangrove forests. These forests need protection against all type of human activities. Other animals found in the delta region are turtles, crocodiles, gharials, snakes, etc.
