Manuscripts =>
1. Manuscripts are those documents which are written by hand or by some typewriter or can be written by some mechanical method.
2. Manuscripts were used to write almost everything before the time when printing came.
3. Manuscripts were generally produced in the form of scrolls or books.
4. In India, manuscripts were written on palm leaf which were in rectangular shape and were used in 19th century.
5. Example of Manuscripts => Codex Manesse, The Isha Upanishad etc.
Inscriptions =>
1. Inscriptions means some content, picture etc. inscribed on wall, brick etc.
2. In ancient times, people used to carve out text, pictures etc. which is written on stone.
3. The study of these inscriptions is called Epigraphy.
4. The person who used the methods of Epigaphy is called Epigrapher or Epigraphist.
5. Example of Inscriptions => Behistun inscription, Marking or Wording on coin etc.
MANUSCRIPTS AND INSCRIPTIONS
MANUSCRIPTS :-
- Manuscripts are hand-written.
- If we bifurcate the word Manuscript then we will understand its meaning. "Manu" means "hand" and "Script" means "to write."
- Manuscripts are generally written on papers, vellum, papyrus etc. Dried palm-leaves were used in Indian subcontinent for writing manuscripts.
- Manuscripts have been a part of our ancient history. When there was no printing technology, people use to write everything with hands. Generally manuscripts were either in the form of scrolls or in the form of books.
- Manuscripts can also be found in the field of science like astronomy, anatomy, zoology etc.
- Since the printing technology has come, therefore the typed documents are also considered as manuscripts now.
- From an author's point of view, a manuscript is an unpublished version of a book. It is edited and proofread and then the necessary changes are made.
- Examples of some Indian manuscripts :- Agni Adhaaneshti, Atma Bodha, Kali Sahastranam etc.
INSCRIPTIONS :-
- Writings which are engraved or carved on some hard surfaces are called inscriptions.
- The word inscription in itself tells about it: something inscribed.
- Carving is generally done on stones, buildings, barks of trees, monuments etc.
- The study of inscriptions is called Epigraphy.
- Inscriptions are of great significance. It gives an adequate information about the ancient rulers. There are inscriptions which have events engraved on it, thus helping the public to learn about history.
- Examples of some Indian inscriptions :- India Gate, Junagadh rock inscription of Rudradaman, Nanaghat Inscription etc.
