Meristematic tissues are those that have the ability to divide to provide growth to plants. These types of tissues are usually present in the parts of plants that grow and eventually turns into permanent tissues by the process of differentiation. There are 3 types of meristematic tissues:
- Apical meristematic tissue
- Lateral meristematic tissue
- Intercalary meristematic tissue
Locations and Functions
- Apical meristem is present in the tips of plants such as tips of roots and shoots. This tissue divides and results in growth of stem and roots of the plant.
- Lateral meristem increases the girth of a plant. That is, it increases the width of the plant.
- Intercalary meristem is present on leaf base and in internodes. They help in the growth in plant base and internodes.
Therefore we can conclude that meristematic tissues are present in the following locations of plants:
- root and shoot tips
- nodes
- girth of stem
- leaf base etc.
