Metamorphosis

refers to the process where an organism undergoes irreversible morphological, physiological and behavioral changes from birth to transform into an adult.

Explanation:

  • Metamorphosis is the collective changes that occur one after another as an organism grows to become an adult from the primitive young stage.
  • In many organisms, it is the transformation or development of larva to an adult form. Metamorphosis can be complete or partial.

Example of metamorphosis:

  • Amphibians: The transformation from aquatic larva or tadpole stage to the adult land-dwelling frog. The adult frog develops legs and other organs from the simple tailed tadpole stage.
  • Insects: metamorphosis takes place from egg to larva to pupa and then to adult butterfly. The adult butterfly complete with wings and other organs look entirely different from the larval stage .
