Minerals - Minerals are homogeneous substance which occurs naturally. Minerals are inorganic substances. Have definable internal structure.

Occurrence -

  • Minerals are found beneath Earth's surface. They are found in compounds.
  • They have a solid crystal structure. They comprises of one or more elements.
  • Different minerals can be identified by their different physical and chemical properties.
  • There are many varieties of minerals of different colours, lusture, density.
  • The geologist characterise minerals by their chemical and physical properties.
  • Igneous and metamorphic rocks - in veins there is smaller quantity and for larger quantity it is called lodes. Examples - Tin, Copper, Zinc, Lead.
  • Sedimentary rocks - Minerals occurs in beds and layers. Examples - Coal, Iron ore, Gypsum, Potash, Salt, Sodium Salt are some that are found in beds and layers.
  • Decomposition of the surface rocks - When there is decomposition of of surface rocks and there is removal of soluble constituents leaves a residual mass of weathered mineral that contain ore. Example - Bauxite.
  • Alluvial deposits - Some minerals are also found in sands of valley floors and the base of hills. They are also called Placer Deposits. Examples - Gold, Tin, Silver, Platinum.

Importance of Minerals -

  • The most things we consume are minerals. Even water contains minerals.
  • Different valuable minerals are used for different development of the economic.
  • The use of minerals minerals make our live comfortable.
  • Minerals are responsible for the biological processes on Earth.

Types of Minerals -

  • Metallic minerals - two types - (i) Ferrous - The mineral that contains Iron. Like, Iron ore, Manganese ore, Chromite, Nickel, Cobalt, Pyrite. (ii) Non - Ferrous - The mineral that contain metals other than iron. like, Gold, Copper, Silver, Bauxite, lead, Tin and Magnesium.
  • Non - Metallic minerals - For example - Limestone, Potash, Mica, Gypsum, Petroleum, Coal.

Iron ore - The most important and basic mineral. It is the backbone of the country. It is used in various development process like construction of houses, dams, buildings etc.

  1. Magnetite - the iron concentration is 70% which is the finest quality. It also has magnetic properties.
  2. Hematite - The concentration of iron is 60% - 70%. It is very useful for industrial works.
  3. Limonite - The concentration of iron is 40% to 60%.
  4. Siderite - It contains 40% to 50% of iron.
