Cotyledons are a significant part of the embryo found in a seed. They are the first parts of a seedling to emerge from the soil when it germinates. Monocotyledons are plants that have only one cotyledon. They also have other characteristics, such as flower parts in multiples of threes.

Flowering plants or angiosperms have been divided into two primary groups - monocotyledons and dicotyledons.

The monocotyledons are plants which have seeds that contain a single cotyledon. They have an adventitious root system. For example : Grass, sugarcane, maize and wheat.

The dicotyledons are plants which have seeds which contain two cotyledons. They have a tap rot system. For example : Mango, neem, sunflower.
