NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students

Mycorrhizae:

 Symbiotic association of fungus with root system.

 Fungal filaments form network around roots.

 Hyphae have very large surface area that absorb mineral ions and water from soil in large volume and provide these to plant.

 In turn, roots provide sugars and N- containing compounds to fungi.

 Some plants have an obligate association with mycorrhizae. E.g., Pinus seeds cannot germinate without presence of mycorrhizae.

Advantages of mycorrhizal association:

 Enhanced plant efficiency in absorbing water and nutrients from the soil.

 Reduced fertilizers and irrigation requirements.

 Increased drought resistance.

 Increased pathogen resistance by competing with root pathogens for space and resources.
