Definition: The Election commission has a fixed criteria to categorize parties registered with it into National Parties, State Parties or other registered but unrecognized parties.
The criteria for National Party is:
1. The said party should have secured at least 6% of valid votes caste, in atleast 4 states either in Lok Sabha elections or State Legislature elections. And atleast 4 seats in Lok Sabha.OR
2. A National Party should win atleast 2% of total seats in LS in atleast 3 states. OR
3. It should be a state party in atleast 4 states.
Based on the above criteria only 6 parties have been declared as National Parties by Election Commission: BJP, INC, BSP, CPI, CPM and NCP
