The causes of water pollution vary and may be both natural and anthropogenic. However, the most common causes of water pollution are the anthropogenic ones, including: Agriculture runoff - carrying fertilizers, pesticides/insecticides/herbicides and other pollutants into water bodies such as lakes, rivers, ponds).

Today's water pollution is happening due to natural sources as well as from human activities. The natural sources of water pollution are given below:
i) When rain occurs and runoff of water occurs then water erosion happens. This is one the causes of water pollution.
ii) The decay of sea plants and animals is converted into a black material. This black material is known as humus material. This is also the reason for water pollution.
iii) Minerals are also the natural sources of water pollution.
