Neurotransmitters, also known as chemical messengers, are endogenous chemicals that enableneurotransmission. They transmit signals across a chemical synapse, such as a neuromuscular junction, from one neuron (nerve cell) to another "target" neuron, muscle cell, or gland cell.

A chemical substance produced and secreted by a neuron is known as a neurotransmitter.
- It diffuses across a synaptic junction between two neurons and causes excitation of another neuron.
- The important neurotransmityters are- Acetylcholine, norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin.
They are of different types
1) Small molecule (acetylcholine)
2)Neuropeptides (endorphins)
3) Other (glycine)
