What are neutrons and protons?

there are more tinier particles than the atom called the protons,neutrons and electrons. 
the protons and neutrons make up the nucleus of the atom together .The strong nuclear force binds protons and neutrons together to make the nucleus. The strong nuclear force is actually a force between quarks and is carried by particles called gluons. Protons and neutrons are made of quarks and they feel the strong nuclear force as well. Electrons do not feel the strong nuclear force.
 
the protons have a positive charge and neutrons have no charge.

Neutrons & Protons are particles smaller than atom hence called as sub-atomic particles...
Both of them together forms Nucleus of an atom
