When the nucleus of an atom undergoes a change forming new atom it releases a tremendous amount of energy, this energy is termed as nuclear energy.

The nuclear energy is generated by nuclear fusion.
A reaction, that alters the energy, composition, or structure of an atom is called a nuclear reaction.
For example, 12Mg²⁴ + 2He⁴ –› 14Si27 + 0n¹

In such reactions, the sum of atomic masses and the sum of atomic numbers on both the sides must be same.
