The term Nutrition refers to the sum of total of all the process concerned in the conversion of food stuffs into the stuff of the body. A nutrient is a substance which provides all the essential nutrients for the growth and maintenance of our body.
The purpose of nutrition is to provide the body with energy for performing the various life activities: to maintain the body heat: to provide the material needed for renewal of worn-out body protoplasm and to provide materials for growth.
There are two types of nutrients, namely the Macronutrients and Micronutrients.
Macronutrients :
Macronutrients are defined as the compounds which are consumed in large quantities. There are three primary macronutrients, namely Carbohydrates, Fats and Proteins.
Micronutrients :
Micronutrients are defined as the compounds which are consumed in small quantities. Micronutrients consists of Vitamins and Minerals. Vitamins such as A, B, C, D, E, K and B-complex such as B12 etc. and Minerals such as calcium, magnesium, sulfur, sodium, iodine, copper and iron etc. are some examples of micronutrients.
