Okazaki fragments are short sequences of DNA nucleotides (approximately 150 to 200 base pairs long in eukaryotes) which are synthesized discontinuously and later linked together by the enzyme DNA ligase to create the lagging strand during DNA replication.

Definition of Okazaki fragments-

  • Okazaki fragments are synthesized in small separate pieces or fragments which are later joined with each other by DNA ligase enzyme.
  • They are small new DNA strands.
  • They are also known as Lagging strand.

This DNA strand is discovered by Reiji Okazaki and Tsuneko Okazaki, in 1968.
