What are okazaki fragments ??

Okazaki fragments are short DNA segments on the lagging strand, formed in the 5’ – 3’ direction, starting from RNA primers. A separate RNA primer is formed for the synthesis of each Okazaki fragment.

During the replication of a DNA molecule,the new strand is synthesized in short segments which are called Okazaki fragments. They are joined together by the enzyme DNA ligase.
