A related field to OMR and OCR is the recognition of barcodes, such as the UPC bar code found on product packaging. One of the most familiar applications of optical mark recognition is the use of #2 pencil (HB in Europe) bubble optical answer sheets in multiple choice question examinations.

OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) recognize the bubbles or check marks on the paper. OMR can read the marks filled in circles but it can’t recognize the characters. OMR technology is mostly used in Multiple choice exams, survey and census forms, etc.

OCR (Optical Character Recognition) recognizes all the characters from the paper document, collects and stores them into editable document. Hand written characters can be recognized by using this technology.
