In general terms, any solvent that contains a labile H+ is called aprotic solvent. The molecules of such solvents readily donate protons (H+) to reagents. Conversely, aprotic solventscannot donate hydrogen

Protonic solvents-The solvent which produces H+ ion when dissolved in water. Non Protonic solvents-The solvent which produces OH- ion when dissolved in water.
