In the middle stage the river normally follows a curved path rather than straight. To and fro movement across the plain results in the formation of meanders. The speed of river water slows down and the river does both the work of erosion and deposition. The river become so weak that even a small obstruction will force the river to bend its path. Once the process of curve formation starts it goes on increasing with time. It does the erosional work on the concave side and the depositional work on the convex side. This tendency increases and the curve takes a S shape. In the end, the curvature becomes so sharp the river breaks through the meander and forms a large loop. This loop forms the oxbow lake.
