The substances which add oxygen to the product are called oxidising agents.

Alkali pottasium permaganate and acidified pottasium dichromate are oxydising agents.

Eg. CH3CH2OH+2[O] ==> CH3COOH+H2O.

Since, oxygen is added therefore, 2[O] (nascent oxygen) is an oxydising agent.
