Oxyntic cells are present in the gastric glands and are responsible for the production of hydrochloric acid, which is necessary to activate the other enzymes. This acid also helps in digestion. These cells respond to 3 types of stimuli called - Histamine, Acetylcholine, and Gastrin. These cells also produce the intrinsic factor which is necessary for the absorption of vitamin B₁₂.  So, oxyntic cells have a major role in digestion, hormone triggering, and many more functions.
