A paraxial ray is a ray which makes a small angle (θ) to the optical axis of the system, and lies close to the axis throughout the system.

Paraxial rays are the ones which are highly divergent from the principal axis of the lens or mirror. They make a difference in that the laws of image formation after reflection or refraction do not apply to them for they are out of the bounds of obvious mathematical assumptions of small angle.
