They worship the Buddha as a teacher. Actually the Buddha is a teacher. Buddhism is the teachings of the Buddha. Monks (Sangha) are teaching the Buddha's teachings to laities, so are too teachers. Sometimes cults came into existence in the name of Buddhism; but cults can't remain in Buddha's teachings, Buddha Sasana.
