periods are horizontal rows and groups are vertical columns in the periodic table

periods:

1.they have elements arranged in order of decreasing metallic character

2.the no. of valence electrons increases as one goes across a period from left to right

groups:

1. the elements are arranged in increasing order of the metallic character

2.the no. of valence electrons remains the same as one goes down a group
