A baby is born with what are known as milk teeth.

These just help in laying the foundation of the permanent teeth and strengthen the gums so that they can support the permanent ones.

The milk teeth start falling off after the kid is used to chewing and teething process is over. This may take several years

Permanent teeth are much stronger and not as fragile. As these stay on for the rest of the life, they are prone to decay and need to be protected
