What are pesticides? Explain giving examples.

Pesticides are used to control weeds, insects, rodent, fungi and diseases of plant. They include weedicides, insecticides and fungicides.

Some of preventive measure of pests are :-

  • Use of resistant varieties.
  • Optimum time of sowing the crops.
  • Crop rotation and cropping system.
  • Deep ploughing of the field in summer to destroy undesirable weeds and pathogens.

Using pesticides cause environmental pollution. They are leached to water resources and aquatic flora and fauna. Through food chains these harmful chemicals reach in the bodies of birds, other animals even human being and harm them.

Pesticides : Those chemicals which are used to kill pests. Depending upon the type of target organisms, pesticides are classified as : (i) insecticides (to kill insects), (ii) fungicides ( to kill fungi) and (iii) herbicides (to kill herbs). These are sprayed on crop plants or used for treating seeds and soil.

Example : Dimethoate, Metasystox, Malathion, Lindane, Thiodan etc.
