Phobia is called an "intense", "persistent", "irrational fear" for something that consciously avoids the "subject", "activity" or "situation". Phobia may vary in magnitude and interfere with good environmental adaptation. There also exist phobias in those who are otherwise "normal & well balanced".

Explanation:

Phobias are of different types,

  1. "Specific phobias": Directed towards specific situations/objects varies e.g.,hydrophobia (fear of water) &  acrophobia (fear of heights)
  2. "Social Phobia":  Fear of social situations  leading to avoiding a vast range of situations wherein they "fear" they would be revealed, scrutinised & likely humiliated by other people.
  3. Agoraphobia: A fear of entering "unfamiliar situations".

  • "Social learning theories" are based on the principle that our positive or negative experience such as lizard and cockroach phobia are the result of an early life learning process. Snakes can be played by small children; they are not conscious of the "risk involved". To them, this is yet another play, because as they "grow up" in "fear of these things" are instilled their "parents & the culture" which is "reinforced" & responsible to reactions like phobia.
  • An unconscious or / and oppressed experiences could involve a psychoanalytical account for this. /For example, in our childhood when we watch someone  torturing say a snake, or a cockroach which had died after some time; this could stay forever in your mind that could describe our phobia to the such "creatures", that can remind us of the event & disturb us emotionally.
